In response to a few comments:
1. I wrote about tapes/recordings (around the time of the Bagrut in May)
and using TTS (text to speech) technology. My recommendation is "Natural
Reader", which is like Read Please and Text Aloud, but also "sits" on your
documents and emails, which means you can recommend students use it on
their own documents and emails (it "sits" in Outlook, too).
2. In my school, we asked for one computer (the vice-principal's) to have a
microphone, loudspeakers and a device for burning. We use "audacity"/ "TTS"
on it. When that computer wasn't free, my principal would let me make use
of his computer for a few minutes, if possible. Obviously, this was only
for students with last minute issues – I prepared in advance. I also had a
condition – until you show me you have a CD player (or walkman or MP3
player, at the time) that you plan to use, I won't record for you. I've been
burned too many times, taking the time to record, only to have the student
forget their gear and manage without the recording.
3. I didn't get money for the work – did I ever get paid by the MOE (in
other places, I did) for making recordings on tapes, making phone calls to
students reminding them to bring their walk men, and waiting until late at
night to record b/c it was the only time I had quiet? I hope the new payment
for working with LD students will cover recording, too, since it is time
consuming.
4. On the day of the Bagrut, and in preparing for the bagrut, the work
shouldn't fall on one person. If one person is more "technically savvy",
they can be put in charge of technical logistics.
5. We wrote in the booklist this year that students with קלטת should order
the CD with the recordings that go with their texts, if available. I saw
that ECB already has files ready to download of text recordings, which
students should be able to download, too, if I'm not mistaken.
I still hope someone has a solution for MP3 player bugs (in lieu of my last
message).
Good luck to us all!
Rachelle
