Dear Laurie, I completely agree with you. The current view of English as an international language, not only the language of it native speakers, advocates connecting English to the culture of its learners. That is, in my opinion Israeli coursebooks should use Israeli (Jewish and Arab) names, people, places, events, etc. Not exclusively, but at least half of the time. This would allow us to broaden our students' horizons while keeping them grounded. Most importantly, I feel it would allow them to identify with the people, events, etc. I always say to my students: "I'm a native Hebrew speaker, just like you. If I could do it (i.e. learn English well), so can you." I think an Israeli-based EFL coursebook would be conveying the same message. Orly
