I use to have the Holux  Slim 236 with my M-Power Voice Note and I was not
happy with the Slim 236 and when I received the Holux M-1000 I never had any
problem and received much better signal even work in a building it look like
to me that you may have gotten a defected Holux M-1000.

It's very well possible you have a bad receiver which unfortunately can 
cause much frustration. I can say that in all my dealings with the Holux 
M-1000 receivers both through GW Micro and through other avenues, I've 
had very positive experiences with them. If you read consumer ratings on 
them, many people are pleased with them.
