Hi Alice,

The PK is a very old machine with limited memory and has a very slow CPU, so
by the time it recalculates the route and "trys" to put you at the nearest
waypoint on the route you have moved quite a distance. The system does try
to move you along your route but a number of things could cause the system
to behave erratic. First you must make sure that Force Sequential route
following is turned off, this is useful when routes you create loop back on
itself. Secondly you must make sure you have automatic advancement of
waypoints along your route turned on. Having this off is great when
following a manual route and you want to really make sure you get to a
waypoint before proceeding to the next. Third if there is a lot of GPS
drift the system could really think you are off-route and try to recalculate
the route again. When this keeps occurring it is best to turn off automatic
route recalculation and then when the route finally is recreated set the
next waypoint to the nearest waypoint closest to your GPS position.

Faster machines especially the Apex really help in reducing the time to
create routes. Also Version 6.2 dramatically improved route creation times
when the system is set to Turns only. If you are using GPS version 6.0 or
6.1 there is a free upgrade to 6.2 which you should defiantly get. If you
are running an earlier version its in your best interest to upgrade to 6.2.
If you are running 6.2 then hopefully the suggestions above will help.

Thanks.

Subject: [gps-talkusers] recalculating routes

Hi, all,
I was in a car using the gps on PK to direct the person driving. Somehow
we got onto the wrong road (Massachusetts signs are *so* hard to follow!),
and the gps said "recalculating route" It took forever, and meanwhile, we
were still moving. Then it kept saying, turn x behind so many yards, miles,
whatever. Then, because we had no opportunity to turn around, it said "off
route," then it said nothing.
When I tried to find out about the next turn on what I thought would be
the recalculated route, it only told me about turns on the last route.
Now, again, I am familiar enough with the area to know that going back
is not the only way, and we did manage to find our way.
Oh, yeah, I also cancelled the route altogether and reentered the
destination address a couple of times to force the gps to calculate a new
route from where we were, but it didn't really do it. And all we had to do
was stay on Route 116 until the turn onto Route 145. It wanted us to get off
16 onto other roads, then onto 145, don't know why?
So my question is: what is supposed to happen when the system recalculates?
Should it not give you directions from whatever position you are in at that
time, no matter how lost or off track you are? Why did it stop giving
directions at all once it told us we were off route?
Thanks.
