I used to not be enarmored with the idea of publishing documentation
related to tooling surrounding i3, but if we clearly remark that it is
community-maintained, I’d be open to it.

don't think it's i3-dev's responsibility, I just think it's lacking in this
otherwise ideal world.

This is usually viewed as a "not i3" issue, which, while technically
correct, of course doesn't address the point you make that coming from many
other environments this is automatic and so we don't see it.
