Dear all,
just to conclude this thread. I find the suggestion by Layus to use arandr the
most convenient, not only to understand how xandr works, but in general to
probe foreign external displays. This ends up being the closest to what I am
used to with Unity (Display Settings programme).
Using xandr directly and mapping it to some mod key combinations is also neat,
but does not fit very my use case, where in most situations I do not know
beforehand the characteristics of the external display.
