Live CD are also dependent upon the Media and most
problems with Live CD
are due to errors in the Media. This is very true
with Ubuntu Live CDs
as far as I have seen. You experience might have
been one such. I had
the same when I tried to install Gutsy a week back,
but as I had
additional CDs I tried with another CD and it worked
like a charm.

Although this might sound a defense to Ubuntu, but
it is very much true
to Media of all distributions. It is also true that,
a person might have
different experience with different distributions,
but please do not try
to generalize anything  on any distro with a few bad
personal experiences.

Dear friend,
Where do you think I got all the distros I have
mentioned from, I downloaded them and cut cds.Why
should Ubuntu's media alone be bad? 
The problem was in the default xorg.conf set up by
gutsy-meant only for 17" crts and lcds.
It is solved in hardy as the new xorg-server has its
own builtin xorg.conf and doesn't depend on the distro
for one, when starting for first time.
Hope that clarifies.
