I used to hate people who said that India was winning software projects from
abroad because of the cost differential. I knew that it was only a temporary
affair (the differential depended on the dollar/rupee ratio) and knew too
that there were CHEAPER alternatives than even India, probably Pakistan,
Vietnam, Russia, Burma, etc. I kept telling them that even if it were true
now, such a situation should change, and we should win our projects because
we do better quality delivery, our process-adherence is better, we are
timely, and AS A BONUS, we are cheaper too!
Why am I saying all this? Well, I feel, the linux-wargroup should stop
talking about COST too. (Yes, I know TCO is different from Cost). We should
talk about ease of use, productivity gain, power, security, scalability, and
AS A BONUS, give it away free too.
What say you?

Got this from my mon, who works for Canara bank:
Apparently they are dumping an accounting package contract
from infosys running on M$ and going for an in-house package
on linux. Reason? Simple: massive cost saving.
"User-friendliness"? Not an issue at all, since users will
run just the one program and probably don't even know what
OS its running on.
Retraining? I'd guess about a week, or even less if the
interfaces are similar.
In spite of all the FUD from M$ about TCO, cost conscious
companies can clearly see the bottom line and choose the
cheapest alternative.
Canara bank are really big, in terms of both turnover
and employees.
I think the trickle is starting to turn into an avalanche
now.
The server market is already in the bag, the enterprise
desktop market is being won and can be considered to be just
a matter of time. It is the home desktop market in which
the ugliest, hardest and most prolonged battle will be fought.
The battle lines are drawn. Ladies and gentlemen, fasten
your seatbelts!
