The primary developer and maintainer of totem happens to work for Red
Hat. So its easier to poke and get bugs fixed but the real reason is
that media players these days tend to frontends to the frameworks doing
the real job. I havent had any trouble with totem on FC5. If you have
any particular file that hangs up totem in a reproducible fashion, a
report would be appreciated. Hard to talk about a issue without very
specific details.
