You need to be more specific with your query.
Verbosity required.
However, assuming, you need to transfer files between
*buntu Linux on your desktop and WIndows XP on your
laptop, you'll need the following (overview).
1. Samba packages (apt-cache search samba*)
2. A shared folder on Windows XP machine (one that has
write permission enabled, if under NTFS) - probably,
disabling the default firewall of Windows XP on the
network connection used for this transfer.
3. Your Broadband router with the USB cable and
ethernet cable connected to LAPTOP and desktop
respectively.
Later, assign them IPs of 192.168.x.x range setting
the broadband router's IP as the gateway for both the
PCs.
Open Konqueror (if in KDE; better actually ;) ) and
type
smb://<IP_ADDRESS_OF_LAPTOP>/shared_folder_name
You should be able to see the shared folder on the
laptop and be able to copy and paste files using the
GUI. :)
