I don't know how many people on this list agree with me, but i prefer
FreeBSD as file server. It is rock solid.
I agree. NFS on Linux sucks big time. This is one area where you
should not listen to the fan boys. It's your data after all. Explore
alternatives like FreeBSD, OpenSolaris etc. At my place of work we
have recently wasted an enormous amount of time wrestling with NFS on
Linux.
