GNU/Linux can be run in various modes termed as "runlevels".

"single user mode" is runlevel 1. To change run levels, we use the
command "init". For example, to change to runlevel 1, run the following
from command prompt (as root).
init 1
To boot into run level 1, you need to modify your "kernel" line in grub
configuration. Just add "1" anywhere in the "kernel" line and you will
boot into single user mode.
2) Why do I need to practice using CentOS instead of RHEL?
CentOS and RHEL contain same packages but RHEL is a paid version for
which you get commercial support. With CentOS, you get community support.
