is it just me or are the slides duplicated at each step?

They'll be _almost_ duplicated. It's Beamer's way of trying to produce
animation-type effects. eg. if you want 3 lines of text to appear one
after the other, beamer will create 3 slides where successive slides
have one more line. Viewing it in presentation mode, or simply making
sure that your viewer is set to "fit-page" zoom level should do it.
