Your requirement is not clear for me . I assume that you are using old
kernel version with Fedora Core 6, now you want the latest one. If this is
your requirement, You can upgrade kernel without compiling from source

If you need compile the kernel for learning purpose or specific task such as
embedded system. I request you to search around the internet you have lot
