Speaking of that - is it necessary to have hal and dbus on a gnome 2.8
install?
Better...components like the gnome-volume-manager (mounts your devices
automatically) use them - morever, nice as a concept - a central
broadcasting server through which event sources could communicate with
listeners, with good configurability for the sysad...I would visualize
many of the present day 'information' daemons (say hddtemp, for
example) using this in the future.
I upgraded to dropline gnome 2.8 from gnome 2.6 recently - and the
fstab-sync (part of hald) keeps updating my fstab so that an entry for
/sys is created - though it is already in mtab. So my initscripts try
to remount /sys and fail - though as /sys is already mounted because of
mtab things work after throwing that error.
You can prevent this by modifying the hal policy - write up a config
file in /usr/share/hal/fdi/[priority]some-name/storage-policy.fdi -
it's an xml file, the dtd is in /usr/share/hal/fdi.dtd - keep the
priority higher than the default policy (usually 90), so that your
policy gets overriden finally - see man fstab-sync for details....
afaik, beagle needs the inotify kernel patch as well...apart from some
other packages...
if you are using reiserfs, extended attributes (REISERFS_FS_XATTR)
must be enabled...
I am currently waiting for inotify to get to the mainstream - hopeful
that it won't be too long, considering it's advantages over dnotify.
