That will be the case. CentOS do not provide Live + installable CD for
that reason.
I had similar issue with Python 2.5 on Centos 5.3.
I you want to compile from source, first install development tools.
There will be lot more than what you might actually need, but as long as
you have enough space, do not bother.
$ yum groupinstall "Development tools"
Then compile it. Search on the web, some would have definitely built a
PHP 5.2 rpm. You do it is your own risk.
