The point Shakti was trying to make was that if you
are new to unix, don't try to compile your own apps
and put them into production.
The binaries provided by your distro goes through
rigorous testing and are better suited for production
use. Further, distro binaries are always up to date
with the latest security patches.
An extreme example of this is OpenBSD were you're
discouraged from compiling your own custom kernel.
You are to run the official GENERIC kernel just like
everyone else. That's just how it works with OpenBSD.
But if you're purpose is to learn, then I completely
agree that compiling your own apps makes good learning.
