Hi arun,
by any chance do you know why ACM0 is not listed here? Am I missing any
configuration params? the modem is now responding from kppp. But fails in
java saying javax.comm.NoSuchPortException :(

These are the standard serial ports and parallel ports in the AT
architecture. The interesting part is that they show up in the devices
list even though the modern laptops have stopped their respective
connectors.
