I have been a member of this list since before it was created - starting with
adding group aliases. I have always followed the practice of letting the list
decide its own policies; it has worked out well so far and I dont see any
reason it cant continue to. Bigger and more affluent groups have come and
gone, but we will go on for ever. Occasionally, it appears, I have to step in
and nudge the group in some direction. The multilingual 'debate' has gotten
out of hand. This list was started with English as the principal language and
unless a majority or at least a large fraction want to change that, it will
not change; large fraction to be viewed in the context of total list
membership which is almost 2300 now. I have already offered, and so has MIT,
to host new list(s) for specific language interests. Chauvinism and jingoism
of any kind have no place in this list. I will remove the emergency moderation
in about 8 hours from now (=1200 hrs UTC = 1730 IST). I would request members
to not post in any language other than English, with or without language tags.
If any list member wants ilugc.tamil or ilguc.telugu or ilugc.finnish or
ilugc.tulu or whatever, please send mail to me (list owner) and not to the
list. Any post (or attempt to post) in other than English to the list will be
treated as a request to open a language specific ilugc and I will create a
separate list. I will send an announcement about the creation of every such
new list to ilugc along with the id of the requester who can thence claim
credit to be the creator of the new list. A second and any further attempts by
any user to post in a language other than English to ilugc (with or without
language tags) will result in individual moderation, short term suspension and
kick-off.
Anyone disagreeing with this policy is welcome to propose sensible
alternatives. Let us all have the good sense to let the list live long and
prosper.
