[Ilugc] Nvidia problems in debian

My issues are purely 2D and under heavy load.
Heavy load for my desktop is
*Firefox (5+ tabs)
*X-Chat (5+ tabs)
*Thunderbird
*GNOME 2.8
*GAIM
*gnome-terminal (3+ tabs)
-- tab1 runs apt-get
-- tab2 runs kernel/software compilation
-- bash
*XMMS
*OOImpress + gedit
I guess the issue is mostly related to gtk2 widget library. I find the
combination awfully slow on both "nv" and "nvidia" driver as well. I'm
on an AMD AthlonXP 1800+, 256MB RAM, GeForce2/MX with 64 MB RAM machine.
Even on my other box (an old Pentium 233 MMX, 64 MB RAM, Riva TNT2 with
32 MB RAM box), I dont see any much difference between the two drivers
(yes, I managed to run Gnome 2.8 for the heck of it!).
Though Gnome is somewhat slow in starting applications, popping menus
and so on, the interactivity seems normal on both drivers on my
machines.
Do you find the same performance difference using apps that run on
Qt/fltk/motif/imlib ?
Try running the following apps, first with "nvidia" and then with "nv"
With "nv" the interactivity is fluent where as with "nvidia" my mouse
skips a few events.
Perhaps this has something to do with "HWCursor" option (under video
drivers section) in your xorg.conf ? Or maybe I'd blame it on driver
support for your specific hardware.
X cursor looks beautiful with "nvidia" driver on my box, as I use
HWCursor and CursorShadow enabled.
Workspace switching is slow.
On Gnome, yes... I find it slow on both "nv" and "nvidia" drivers.
Probably because this is a kernel issue.
I'm running 2.6.10 /w ckdev patchset + inotify.
On my kernel, I had to do --extract-only and then do a "make install"
from the sources.
Also the best test would be to cat a huge file to /dev/null or
/dev/zero And then generate random X Events and check the
interactivity.
Tried this too (cat /dev/urandom > /dev/null). Highly responsive on my
lean setup, and on KDE, but on Gnome, there were glitches with both "nv"
and "nvidia" drivers. Screen freeze/jerky behaviour when I try moving a
firefox window randomly across the screen.
However, my system might be too slow/outdated for Gnome to really test
the performance difference between the 2 drivers.
