Drupal is a light-weight CMS when compared to Joomla. If
you are going to create a portal that is simple or a website
focussed more on content, articles, news, blogs, community
and so on... then Drupal should be the right pick.

What makes you think drupal is a cms suitable for simple portal or a
website ? Drupal websites have survived slashdot effect without any
hassle whereas most of the CMS have failed.

For rapidly setting up large-scale e-commerce centric portals,
Joomla stands out. It offers way too many features out-of-the-box
targeting e-commerce centric requirements.


 E-commerce engine is a plugin for jhoomla and jhoomla is not
e-commerce centric solution. For e-commerce centric requirements have
a look at zen-cart which has a light weight cms built in. Zen cart
website http://www.zen-cart.com/ is an example of what zencart can do
(it uses no cms and whole website is built on zen cart engine).

Wordpress and the likes are merely blog-hosting suite. Whatever you
pick, think of how you'd want to live with them in the long run.
Migrating from one suite to another (Drupal to Joomla or vice versa,
for instance) can be an arduous affair in my experience, once your
website has grown large enough.
