An ISO image (files present in compact disk) can be

this can be done.
but how do you dump the dvd drive's contents onto the hdd without access
to a dvd drive either on that machine or some other machine on the same
network?
even if it is a machine on the same network, dumping the contents of a
dvd drive to another machine reliably is rather time consuming .. i
still remember karra sriram coming over to my place at 9 PM one night,
rsyncing a copy of the PCQ sarge dvd onto his hard disk connected to my
PC, while the dvd drive was mounted on my laptop, the PC's dvd combo
drive having a technical snag of some kind ... and leaving a bit past
midnight. :)
