Disclaimer: I am not an authority on this stuff, the below is just
what I think the situation is.
I think it matters with Malayalam. If you look up the Wikipedia entry
on Malayalam, you will find:
"Malayalam now consists of 56 letters including 20 long and short
vowels and the rest consonants. The earlier style of writing is now
substituted with a new style from 1981. This new script reduces the
different letters for typeset from 900 to less than 90. This was
mainly done to include Malayalam in the keyboards of typewriters and
computers."
Now, my problem is with the new style introduced from 1981. As far as
I can make out, Malayalam Unicode has only this new style in it.
Unfortunately, my Malayalam education has been in the "old" style and
hence I find it quite difficult to read the new one (that is,
Unicode-enabled Malayalam sites). I suppose it is only a matter of
practice :)

The left-hand side is with Padma translating the page to Unicode, the
right-hand side is without. You can see there are some differences
(mainly, the "chillaksharams" are gone), and I find the right-hand
side version faster and easier to read.
