Hi Raja,
I'm out of town, and I don't have the boards in front of
me, but I've used a pair of Socket-370 Biostar M6VLA with a
Via C3/733 for about 4 years. They ran RH 7.3 quite nicely,
but there were issues with GCC 3.x and the Via C3 - which
are probably fixed in GCC 4.x. It's quite a nice combo, if
you can get hold of them. Funnily enough, you can get an
Intel Tualatin Celeron 1.2 GHz + i810e motherboard for less
money today - about Rs.2k. The Tualerons utterly dominate
the low end - they're about equivalent to a Northwood Celeron
2.60 GHz on typical integer/pointer code found on GNU/Linux
boxes.
The main issue with all the low-end P3/P4 boards is poor
quality Chinese/Taiwanese electrolytics which invariably
burst within a year. I work around this issue by replacing all
the electrolytics with high-quality Japanese electrolytics
of which I have a dwindling hoard. They're probably good
for 10-20 years of continuous operation with Panasonic
FC/FK/FM, Nichicon Px series, Chemicon LXZ/KZG or
similar - all of which are quite hard to find locally.
If you want a reliable combination that works out-of-the-box,
go with a PowerColor A300M (Socket-478, ATI Radeon 300)
and a Prescott Celeron 2.26 GHz for a total of about Rs.5k,
or a Sempron-64/2500+ and just about any Socket-754 board
for about the same price.
About Rs.10k gets you an ATI Socket-775 board + Intel
Pentium D 805 + 512 MB of DDR2. That's a pretty good
deal for a dual-core P4 that overclocks to 4.1 GHz out of
the box.
