long since having used windows...
wmv = Windows Media Video. It is a container that can contain either
older version of video codecs or the newer standard codec (VC-1) for
HD-DVD, Blu-ray discs.
wmv decode was added to ffmpeg libraries only sometime this year. The
version of ffmpeg in Sarge and hence the Mplayer, VLC or any media
player that is in Sarge and uses ffmpeg wont have the decoding
capabilities for wmv.
If you are using the debian-multimedia.org repository you will find all
the components for playing back any video file. But I am not sure if the
version they have for Sarge has all the latest improvements. Your only
choice may be to install the legally dubious w32codecs package from there.
