This is the reason you are not able to copy the DAT file also.
I have experienced the same problem with mplayer.
I had never tried to use mplayer earlier. I tried with mplayer
"vcd://2" and it works now. But Xine reports that "no input plugin
available for....". Now that I can watch the VCD using mplayer, i
don't have a control panel in mplayer to adjust the
contrast/brightness/ or fast forward. The video out of mplayer is too
bright and very little contrast.
I have no idea how to solve it but my experience is that gentoo linux plays
VCDs properly but OpenBSD doesn't.
xine used to work just fine for me when I was with dapper.
