I am not aware of devices that support BSNL (ADSL) and custom firmwares.
You can get list of models that support ADSL and check against the
supported devices for dd-wrt[1], openwrt[2] .I am sure there should be some.
Coming to advantages of using custom firmwares over stock, custom firmwares
give you more options to tune your hardware (changing radio power to
increase range, although this might lower life of hardware), some
additional features like bandwidth monitoring (which some basic routers
dont support at granular level [per device, time of day]). Some of these
custom firmware also has plugins at router level to support applications
like tor, vpn, dlna etc.
The other advantage of using open firmware is, you usually get SSH access
to your router which you cant have in most OEM firmware. This can
theoretically help you to deploy *tiny* applications on your router / say
have a local dns cache at router.
I have been using Gargoyle[3] for around 2 years and it works well for
basic device level bandwidth monitoring.
Last but not least, the satisfaction of running FOSS as against proprietary
firmware. :)
