Yes it is an incorrect assumption made by them. But most of them
still do it. I have personally introduced around 30 of my friends to
GNU/Linux, and most of them still don't use the command line. IMO,
GNU/Linux is not only for CS guys but also for the general public. And
I don't prefer forcing them to use the command-line. I've seen many of
my friends who could have become interested in CS but for their
introduction to C in their 9th and 10th grade. This scares most of
them away from CS.
I also believe that there is more to GNU/Linux than the command
line. For eg. I want schools to teach computers as tools for education
rather than using them as a subject on its own right. We've lots of
educational tools like GCompris, Stellarium, Step, etc,. I don't think
that the command line would be necessary to make them use this.
I personally love the command-line, but I don't think it would be
right for most people, who just want their computers to help them,
rather than wanting to learn how it works. For those who are
interested in learning more, can do so with Linux, unlike Windows,
which prevents them from learning.
