Thats conventional wisdom. But since you are better placed to try a
contrarian view, could you, as an experiment, tell your students that the
only thing they are expected to do in the computer lab is to 'create'
something they can be proud of at the end of each class - be it a program
that calculates fibonacci numbers or a goggle earth flyby of mount everest
or solving some problems in khanacademy.org or some art using, say,
muro.deviantart.com!! The reward will be having their 'creation' posted to
the school notice board, in your annual souvenier, mailing lists you
follow! You can send the creations to me, I'll put it on my website!
# 95% of the students are only "computer users" not "learner"
My opinion is to target the 5% who can be pushed further, achieve great
things and bring glory to themselves and the institution. This will
motivate atleast another 5% to follow their lead. Focusing all efforts on
average students makes even the top performers do only average things
because that seems to be enough to get along.
# You can not eradicate MS from student's domain
I agree. If MS is not solving a problem it will go out of the market
itself.
