Application setup is the same everywhere (almost). I'm
*forced* to use FreeBSD (and thats an ancient "custom"
version) at work. I have no comlpaints as long as Emacs,
Screen, Bash, etc.,. can work no matter what OS it is.
Infact, at one point of time, i was quite happy with a
cygwin setup that ran emacs, screen, etc.,. on a windows XP box.
The first version I used FreeBSD 5.1.
It ran well on both my P4 and my old P1 166 Mhz.
Even X ran without any problems on my old SiS 6202 VGA card.
I also loved the ports package system and its simplicity.
Recently, I'm reading good reviews of NetBSD 2.0 with claims that
It performs better/is faster than FreeBSD 5.3 on micro-management of
tasks.
