Which version of nvidia drivers were you using ? and what was your
motherboard+video card specs ?
I've been using for a long time on my ASUS A7V266EX motherboard (KT266
chipset) with NVidia GeForce2 MX. It works pretty stable on my machine
though (UT2004, Quake3 Arena, SoF work smoothly).
You might need to enable - Option "NvAGP" "1" in your XF86Config (or
xorg.conf) for some motherboards and disable agpgart support from your
kernel if there are occasional freeze/crash on your X server.
