My friend had _exactly_ this problem on a laptop about half a year ago.
I do believe installing a newer kernel (perhaps from karmic-backports)
solved the problem in his case. Have you tried this?

I have also experienced this problem a few years ago with CentOS 4.x running 
on HP4xxx workstations. HP documented this as happening with ps2 keyboard and 
usb mouse (both ps2 or both usb worked fine). The temporary fix was to switch 
to both usb or both ps2 and it got sorted out after kernel updates.
