Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu. Check

LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is separate distro from Mint team which
is based on Debian than Ubuntu.

Linux mint is more "fully loaded " than ubuntu with all codecs etc in
buillt into the distro . And its not always based on ubuntu . There is
a Debian derrivative called LMDE .
