1. Store account information in a database. LDAP is eminently suitable for this.
2. Hash your mail spool directories. The last time I did this, I had
mail spools in /home/mailspool/b/i/binand (two-level hashing).
3. Use a scalable and feature rich mail server software. I had used
Courier and would swear by it. Supports LDAP out of the box.
4. Make sure you have big enough and separate spool and queue partitions.
