well, 'working for iit' does offer some non-monetary benefit - and it usually
translates into monetary benefits a year or two later when they seek jobs
elsewhere. in the last seven years, we have managed to find three candidates
in
a series of replacements.

I have directly experienced this; way back in 1995, I started working
as a customer support engineer with most of my clients being the
various departments in IIT, Madras.
And the experience gained from such client interactions has proved to
be quite invaluable -- such exp carried weightage with prospective
employeres, and personally to me, IIT, Madras was one among the first
places, where I got to work on GNU/Linux and SUN Solaris systems :-)
