Since everything in Linux is a file, you can create a virtual NIC by
duplicating the eth0 device file.
...and pray tell how is that done ?? What exactly is the eth0 device file ?
Im sorry, the previous was a top post. ;)
Although, top posting is bad, leaving out context is also just as bad (if not
worse). Please use interleaved posting.
To the OP, you asked:
Anyone know how to configure the virtual IP on the same Ethernet
interface(ethx) ?
I mean, Configure the multiple IPs on eth0, not eth0:0 or eth0:1
What exactly do you mean ? If you do not want the association of eth0:X with
the
IP, how else will you refer to the device associated with the IP ? (for
instance
while using the ifconfig, route or iptable commands).
There is a way to do using RTNETLINK, But I am not able to find any resource
in the internet.
If anyone have come across some utility or RTNETLINK please share your ideas.
AFAICT[1], RTNETLINK is refers to the netfilter API to manipulate the kernel
routing tables not any user space tool to assign IP addresses to NICs
