Kindly note that this
laptop has "agere soft modem".
Softmodems/Winmodems were an experiment to reduce the HW
costs of modems by off-loading some of the baseband DSP
computations on to the main CPU itself. Most of them have Windows
drivers only - although there has been an active project to support some
of them on Linux. Do a Google search for 'Linmodem'.
IMHO, Softmodems are a terrible idea apart from the difficulty
of configuring them on non-Windows platforms. Get a decent
PCMCIA hardware-modem, say a Megahertz/3Com/USRobotics/
Xircom, and you should be fine. These are still fairly pricey
in India - shop around.
In my experience, old Megahertz 1144/2144 14.4 kbaud PCMCIA
modems with XJack connector were the best for Indian dial-up lines;
they very rarely dropped the connection. YMMV - test and check out
some of the 56k HW modems - it's possible that they work better
with electronic exchanges. See if you can test them before buying -
modems vary greatly in quality, and they're critically dependent on
the kind of equipment they're talking to at the exchange end of the
line.
