I use HP deskjet F4288 and i am able to scan and take print outs in Ubuntu even 
without installing the HP ?driver. I guess this would be the case even for 
other Linux distros.
HP F4288 is now succeeded by F4488 and it can be used for 
print-scan-copy(xerox).The cost is approx Rs.3550/-
