[Ilugc] kernel compilation woes

Check modutils package is upgraded or not ??
I installed module-init-tools-3.1 before compiling the kernel.
modprobe --version says "2.4.22" .
Do I have to update my /etc/rc/d/rc.sysinit file or something ?
Because while booting it is rc.sysinit that throws the error msg.
It tries to invoke /sbin/mingetty from /etc/inittab and apparently /dev/tty*
are just
not getting created.
