The very first (or second or third) ILUGC meet I attended had Asokan
demoing Debian "potato" (it was 'frozen' back then) on his Dell laptop
that he lovingly called "DellBian". Everything worked out of the box.
Sound, Graphics (on a large 1280x1024 display running windowmaker),
Network.
Of course, "out of the box" is a term that continues to take a
different meaning during each era. :) One had to type 'lspci' and
'modprobe' the appropriate modules and almost always it was preceded
by a kernel compile. and often there were these huge "cultural
divides" between various distros. People would complain that there is
no pppconfig in redhat or a sndconfig in debian and such.
