[Ilugc] mounting problem

As root user, what does "ls -l /etc/mtab" show? If you cannot mount and
fix perms as root user then your system is hosed. Rebooting might
solve the problem.
Does not read either. ls -al says permission denied which means no read
access. I came to the hosed conclusion much earlier but wanted to see if
some wise men could help.
Am on Gutsy. Read some place that Synaptic run upgrades of X11 sometimes
hoses /etc/mtab. Guess I'm a victim of that. Am left scratching my head.
Hmm. IIRC, the system should work even in the absence of /etc/mtab, albeit
with some issues, with /proc/mounts. One thing to try out is to simply copy
over /proc/mounts to /etc/mtab. /proc/mounts leaves out some of the details
included in /etc/mtab, but at least, the system will work properly. You can
also soft link /etc/mtab to /proc/mounts. The issues are minor IIRC..
something to do with loopback mounts or mounting with `user' not working
properly.
