The "mutt-way" of doing it is to have a mail fetching thingy
(fetchmail), (an optional) mail filtering thingy (procmail) and a mail
client (mutt).
procmail is good at mail filtering in much better ways
than, say, evolution/thunderbird.
Even if you wanted to switch to something other than mutt, you can
continue to do so without having to "import" (or worse, recreate) all
your filters again in your new client.
