1.what is a monolithic kernel.
Google is your friend. Monolithic is the
only choice you get if you want to use Linux/*BSD.
2.what is the memory -resolution tradeoff to be
followed while configuring the X server
It's no longer an issue. There's enough memory on today's
cards to support 32-bit depth at full resolution. The limitation
is in the monitor (CRT or LCD). The rule I follow is to use the
highest resolution I can comfortably see on my monitor with
minimal eye-strain. These are (on IBM CRT monitors, all at 16-bit
depth):
15": 800x600
17": 1024x768
19": 1280x1024
21": 1440x1080
The monitors can display much higher resolutions, but I don't use them. With
anti-aliased fonts, you can probably go one step higher without increased
eye-strain - YMMV.
My advice is to use virtual desktops or Xinerama if you want more display area,
rather than higher resolutions.
