Well, it depends on your monitor, if you have a 15" monitor, 1024x768
would be more than sufficient, and using a high quality display
definitely uses more memory.
The rule of the thumb is, it shouldn't be too much of a strain on your
eyes.
Configuring your monitor incorrectly might sometimes burn it, read the
manual accompanied for the horizontal sync and vertical refresh values.
The best possible way to configure XFree86 is by running XFree86
-configure, and then adjusting the parameters to suit your needs.
