hi,

i would use it for basic application devlopment (prog in C,C++ and scripts).
You have a conservative system, so I'd really suggest you use the
whole disk space to be sure that you won't have disk space crunches
later.
As for Linux distros, I have managed to run Debian Sarge on a P-III
733 MHz with 56 MB RAM. Which means that you may even be able to run
KDE/GNOME (if you are adventurous) using Sarge. Plus, the Debian
advantage of having all packages at your disposal with APT.
Slackware also ran very well on a similar configuration without many
hiccups. It should also satisfy most of the needs of any programmer
and casual user who knows his/her way around configuration...
But the best way is to try differentthings out and settle for the best...
HTH.
