it'd probably be instructive for you to identify when this behaviour
started happening, and whether you've just installed any new software,
updated video drivers, or what has happened in the life of your system
generally,
that might enable you to naill down this indeed ugly sounding problem.
however be aware that this isn't strictly a scripting question, and there
may be better forums to get the more generic system help you may need to
solve this one.

does unloading and reloading jaws change the problem? not rebooting I mean,
but restarting it from a desktop shortcut, rather than it starting as a
service upon bootup?
