[leasbirds] 4/16 Clapp; and quest for ID help

Two Western Kingbirds; or one athletic individual who moved a quarter mile
whilst I circled the lake (can't tell; they all look the same to me).  These
are first-of-season sightings for me.

 

Good numbers of Blue-winged Teal, Cinnamon not sighted.  Now five Avocets,
joined by two Stilts, also FOS for me.

 

Continuing eerie absence of songbirds of any kind, save for overpopulation
of urban familiars.

 

In the drainage area at W end of south lake, where storm drain that runs
through the gardens exits, I surprised a peculiar bird; had two very brief
views of this skulker.  Sandpiper-shaped; size of a Dowitcher or Snipe.
Streaking/barring very snipe-ish, ditto the strong preference to hide in the
reeds and quickly drop when flushed.  However, the quick impression was of a
less chunky bird, maybe a slightly over-fed Yellowlegs (. . . or an
Ethiopian Snipe, suffering malnutrition?).  I still think the bird was at
least 70% Snipe.  Just wondering:  are there any records of Stilt Sandpipers
visiting this region?
