Greetings, After yesterday's glorious half inch of rain that fell in Lubbock, I made a concerted effort to be out at Clapp Park first thing in the morning. It was a fantastic decision with many a good bird to be found. Quite a few hummingbirds about. I could only confirm the identities of Black-chinned, but I suspect that I had at least one Broad-tailed. Dickcissels and Upland Sandpipers were noted as flyovers. Many Mississippi Kites hanging about - a good mix of adults and young. An Olive-sided Flycatcher was first noted in the dead trees in the thick area along the berm, but later moved to the tall dead cottonwood in the middle of the berm where it remained until I left. 1 Loggerhead Shrike was in the Arboretum and three more were on the barbed wire around the radio tower. A peregrine Falcon sat preening on the water tower. A good flock of 11 Bronzed Cowbirds were in the grass on the north side of the park. A MacGillivray's in the thick veg near the junipers. The area where the playa meets the fence of the arboretum held the most birds, Three Orchard Orioles, many Painted Buntings, a Least Flycatcher and another unidentified empid, a male and female Blue Grosbeak, at least one Indigo Bunting flew by. A Common Yellowthroat was in the thick vegetation. One Yellow Warbler and Wilson's Warbler were in the mix. Flyovers from Great and Snowy Egrets. The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron continues to haunt the playa. Several Black-crowned Night-Herons were roosting around the playa. 39 species total. Not a bad uptick to this seemingly slow migration. With the new water in the playa, things could get interesting out there before it is all said and done. Cameron Carver Lubbock, TX
