Hi All,
We (Jim K, Tess Tross for a bit, and myself) headed to Clapp late this
afternoon. No worries, we kept our distance from each other. It was fairly
slow, but we did find some gorgeous breeding plumage Yellow-rumped Warblers
(both Myrtle and Audubon’s) as well as a possible hybrid. Please see the notes
below and the map shows where we saw them. How do you determine a Myrtle x
Audubon’s hybrid? I only know to look at the throat and I’ve only seen one
before...I put it down as one for now so that I wouldn’t forget about it.
Both Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons were there as well; one on
either side of the playa path and both also spotted by Jim K. Later in the
evening we spotted a couple male Yellow-headed Blackbirds mixed in with the
Red-wings. Jim K. found a Cooper’s Hawk that he got us onto and later I
accidentally flushed two Sharp-shinned that I never saw before they flew.
Fortunately, both re-perched nearby for good looks. I’ve been having trouble
with my Cooper/Sharpie IDs lately, so it was great to get good looks at both!
One of the Sharpie’s even stayed fluffed and showed the white spots on the
back!!! I’ve seen it in pics, but I don’t think I’ve seen it in person before.
Really reminded me of a Carolina Wren’s spots when it’s fluffed up. A bit
ironic...
As we left, Jim K. spotted a recently fledged Eurasian-collared
Dove...fledglings are not on my radar yet!
I looked for the warblers at shrubhenge, but only saw a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
A refreshing and enjoyable afternoon. :)

2 Sharp-shinned Hawk -- Fluffed with the white spots on its back :) Not a well
defined cap, rounded head, short tailed compared to the Cooper’s we saw. 4 wide
bands on the tail past the tips of his wings. Tail was more square than the
Cooper’s, but a little roundish appearing later on. Gray on head comes down to
just below the eye. Whole back of neck is gray (wide). Also has fluffy
undertail coverts. Primary projection comes down at least 3 of the tail bands;
wings were relaxed. Full crop. Another flew from not far away from the first
and the first was still perched where we had left it. Same primary projection.

1 Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle x Audubon's) -- Looking for confirmation on how
to determine a hybrid. This one looked like an Audubons with the solid black
upside down “V” breast, but the throat had just a pale yellow in the center.
White around the pale yellow on the throat. In the trees to the north west of
the playa trail.
1 Northern Cardinal -- Heard singing
