Greetings All:
Lubbock generally has a fairly good fall hummingbird season
(surprisingly good to a lot of folk who haven't lived here) and this
can be boosted a bit by artful use of feeders, wildflower plantings,
and provision of roosting trees.. With hummingbirds in mind I have
planted liveoaks (which are migratory hummingbirds seem to favor for
roosting), planted a mixture of lantana, salvia, and turk's-cap, and
do my best to keep up with 6-8 hummingbird feeders throughout the fall
season.
A summary of this year's results would be average Black-chinned
Hummingbird numbers, much better than average Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds, and poor numbers of everything else (Rufous,
Broad-tailed, and Calliope in poor numbers; Anna's not seen at all).
Overall, therefore, diversity was quite poor an a day to day basis
though I did a good job of keeping the feeders clean and full.
Additionally, no hummingbirds made a wintering attempt in my yard this
year and I usually have several who stick until the first major winter
storm and have had, during a couple of mild winters, birds that made
it all the way through!
For those who are interested, the following is a daily summary from
the first appearance of a non-Black-chinned Hummingbird through to the
last sighting of any hummingbirds at all (coding a=adult, i=immature,
f=female, m=male, BCHU=Black-chinned, RT=Ruby=throated,
BT=Broad-tailed, RU=Rufous, and CA=Calliope) so, for example, 1 im
BCHU = one immature male Black-chinned Hummingbird.
